Teacher

 Teacher

I don't know how to say the things
I want so much to say
I don't know how to keep you here
And make you want to stay.

I never learned the lessons
For there was no one to teach
About love and life and how it works
So it stayed out of my reach.

I had no one to show me love
But of hatred, I had plenty
And they threw my love upon the ground
Until there wasn't any.

But still I knew deep in my heart
That love was a reality
And that there were people who had a lot
There just wasn't much for me.

So I learned to live in love songs
In movies and in books
I wrote characters that I could love
Who in life, gave me no looks.

I never understood just why
Love passed me by unseen
An ugly step-sister scrubbing floors
While in my heart, a queen.

The fairy stories of my youth
That I believed were true
Never came true in my life
Till my eyes fell on you.

And yet, I knew it couldn't be
That you could love me back
A man so rich in life and love
While I had only lack.

I never learned to love a man
Who loved me for myself
I was just used and then refused
And put upon a shelf.

My mother never told me
How to find love true
And I don't think she could have done
For her life was loveless too.

So I grew up on my own terms
Not knowing wrong from right
Loving all who crossed my path
But crying alone each night.

I guess I need a teacher
To teach me how love is
To give me many lessons
And make sure I pass the quiz.

I have a lot of love in me
And so much I'd like to give
Before my life comes to an end
I'd like to really live.

They say love will come when you're ready
And your teacher will come if you pray
Well, I'm ready for love now, my teacher
Teach me how to love you today.
