We Are Like Trees

We Are Like Trees

We are like trees
Our roots go deep
Even as our branches are lopped off
By life and love and loss

Our roots go deep
And try to hang on
To every bit of life
Every drop of love

And even when it appears
That we are dead or dying on the outside
The scent of love's rain will revive us
And make us stand up on the inside
And reach out for life again.

Job 14:7

“For there is hope for a tree, If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
And that its tender shoots will not cease.

Your Eyes Are Like....

Ocean Eyes

Your Eyes Are Like....

Your eyes are like the ocean

Deeper than the sea
And swimming there inside their depths
Is where I want to be.

Your eyes are like the heavens

Up above my head
Sending signals to my brain
Demanding to be read.

Your eyes are like soft rainy days

And sometimes like a storm
Blazing up with passion's fire
To make my cold heart, warm.

Your eyes are like twin mirrors

Hear me, yes, it's true
I see me in your eyes of love
And in my eyes, you see you.

Your eyes are my jewels and my gold

My silver shining sea
And joyous I live now I've found you
And your eyes shine on me.

Unbeknownst To Me

Unbeknownst To Me

He stood there, musing
As he often did
About deep and wondrous things
That only a poet could perceive.

I watched him from my window
Hidden in the shadows
Of lace curtains and pale moonlight
With no candle to show him
Who watched or why.

He stood by the street lamp
Leaning back and looking at the moon
Listening to the train sounds
From across the river
And the beating of his sad and soulful heart.

Three or four times a week, he came
And stood there in that place
Not speaking, not acknowledging a nod
Or a frown or a smile
Just standing there, musing
And I watched him with my own lonely heart
And longing in my eyes.

I didn't know him and yet I did
Did as well as I knew myself
And what I needed from the moon
And the world and life and poems
That had no end.

I needed to be seen and known
And found and loved
I needed to watch the moon
And listen to the train
And walk in the rain and share my pain
While holding the hand of the man
Whose heart I felt as deeply as my own.

I didn't know what I would do
The evening that he didn't show up
On my corner in the moonlight
To stand there watching the moon
And the world pass by............
(And unbeknownst to me...
Me in my shadowed window.)

I had no idea
That he thought the same thoughts about me
That he longed to look into my eyes
And hold my hand and kiss my lips
And sing me songs and read me poetry
For hours on end. I didn't know.

I see him look at his watch,
Look up at the moon,
Turn to walk down the street toward the river,
Turn around again and grab hold of the street lamp
And do a wild child-like twirl around it
And hear him laugh out loud.

Then to my amazement, he walks over to my building
Looks up at my window and whistles softly
"Hey, girl." he says and stands on his tip toes, stretching
"Hey, girl, you wanna come dance in the moonlight?"
"Hey, girl......" and before he can finish his question
I am out my door, down the stairs and outside
In the falling darkness, looking into his brown eyes.

"Finally." he says so quietly I'm not sure he spoke it
"I thought I would have to wait here forever."
And I question him with my shining eyes and he shrugs
"No, I'm not deranged, I'm just shy."
"So am I." I say like a whisper, laughing like a child
And we stare at one another in wonder and awe.

And unbeknownst to us
Two grandmothers somewhere say "Amen"
And bow their heads and clasp their hands
And smile toward Heaven thanking God
That their prayers have been answered at last
Prayers that their two lonely children
Have finally found each other as was ordained
And before it was too late for them
To ever have known it

And that night around that street lamp
With the moon smiling down on us
And the song of the lonesome train
Serenading us with sweetness,
We found one another
As though we had never been apart.

The Beautiful words of RUMI

This we have now
is not imagination.

This is not
grief or joy.

Not a judging state,
or an elation,
or sadness.

Those come and go.
This is the presence that doesn't.
A momen of happiness,
you and I sitting on the verandah,
apparently two, but one in soul, you and I.
We feel the flowing water of life here,
you and I, with the garden's beauty
and the birds singing.
The stars will be watching us,
and we will show them
what it is to be a thin crescent moon.
You and I unselfed, will be together,
indifferent to idle speculation, you and I.
The parrots of heaven will be cracking sugar
as we laugh together, you and I.
In one form upon this earth,
and in another form in a timeless sweet land.

I was dead
i came alive
i was tears
i became laughter

all because of love
when it arrived
my temporal life
from then on
changed to eternal

love said to me
you are not
crazy enough
you don't
fit this house
i went and
became crazy
crazy enough
to be in chains

love said
you are not
intoxicated enough
you don't
fit the group
i went and
got drunk
drunk enough
to overflow
with light-headedness

love said
you are still
too clever
filled with
imagination and skepticism
i went and
became gullible
and in fright
pulled away
from it all

love said
you are a candle
attracting everyone
gathering every one
around you
i am no more
a candle spreading light
i gather no more crowd
and like smoke
i am all scattered now

love said
you are a teacher
you are a head
and for everyone
you are a leader
i am no more
not a teacher
not a leader
just a servant
to your wishes

love said
you already have
your own wings
i will not give you
more feathers
and then my heart
pulled itself apart
and filled to the brim
with a new light

overflowed with fresh life.
now even the heavens
are thankful that
because of love
i have become
the giver of light

There's courage involved if you want
to become truth.

There is a broken- open place in a lover.

Where are those qualities of bravery and
sharp compassion in this group? What's the
use of old and frozen thought?

I want a howling hurt. This is not a treasury
where gold is stored; this is for copper.

We alchemists look for talent that
can heat up and change.

Lukewarm won't do. Halfhearted holding back,
well-enough getting by? Not here.

Alien Eyes Repost

start the music now......join in the cosmic dance.

Alien Eyes

Dancing after midnight, dreaming
With eyes as black as coals
Floating off the dew dropped meadows
With sadness in our souls.

Silver vessels watching us
As we begin our dance
We'd journeyed long looking for solace
To seek our second chance.

The darkened space, a hungry mouth
That swallows by degrees
We left the galaxies behind
That would not hear our pleas.

On angel's wings we do not fly
Nor walk the way of men
We dance step like the evening breeze
That's the way it's always been.

Music from the Universe
Fills our inhuman hearts
We long to join the symphony
But we are shunned apart.

But dance me now, my shadow lover
Dance me to the dawn
For night will end and with the morning
In silence we'll be gone.

Celestial beings love the earth
Like earthlings love the sky
But they will never know this freedom
Until the day they die.

We dance in light, we live in night
In joyous sweet despair
We watch them as they walk below us
And they never know we're there.

Our slender hands now joined together
We dance around the moon
And sigh to leave this place of beauty
For we'll be flying soon.

The earthlings do not often treasure
And rarely recognize
The wonder of this world we covet
With our dark alien eyes.

We love this world, we love this sky
That they barely give a glance
But tonight it's ours and we are happy
Tonight we come to dance.
