The In-Between Time

Saturday, December 28, 2019

The In-Between Time

Sun going down into the black well of night,
It sighs and whispers, "See you in the morning."
And holds onto the day as long as it can
Not wanting to be alone.

The shadows come first, like errant clouds
And then the sunset, the twilight
The golds and cobalt blues so ethereal
They make you want to cry without knowing why.

Slipping now, slowly, like a broken kite on the water,
The sun dips, rouses again, and gives up the fight
Going under the blanket of pink clouds in the West
Yawning like a sleepy baby sinking into dreams.

I know how it feels, the sun
I know how hard I try to hold onto your voice
On the telephone, your words on the piece of paper,
Your hands as they pull out of mine and rush off towards tomorrow.

My lips hold to yours as long as they can
Tasting your kiss even after you've gone away
My heart feels your imprint against my chest
As my arms close and grasps your form of empty air.

Twilight is so lonely, so lovely, but oh, so lonely
The in-between time, not day nor night, but a time all it's own
'Twixt shade and shadow and blue gone to midnight and moon
The time the heart fills with longing and hears only whispers.

And when the darkness comes, as it always does,
I wait for the man in the moon to smile
And if he does not, I know he is sitting alone
On the dark side of the moon, sighing, just like me.

Waiting for love to wave it's hands and gather me back
Into the daylight and out of the darkness
That can only be lit by your love and the waking sun
The bright day separated from the beautiful night
By the in-between time.....and the magic of the twilight.

Your Eyes Are Like.........

Your Eyes Are Like....

Your eyes are like the ocean
Deeper than the sea
And swimming there inside their depths
Is where I want to be.

Your eyes are like the heavens
Up above my head
Sending signals to my brain
Demanding to be read.

Your eyes are like soft rainy days
And sometimes like a storm
Blazing up with passion's fire
To make my cold heart, warm.

Your eyes are like twin mirrors
Hear me, yes, it's true
I see me in your eyes of love
And in my eyes, you see you.

Your eyes are my jewels and my gold
My silver shining sea
And joyous I live now I've found you
And your eyes shine on me.

THE GLORY TRAIN

Train sounds

 The Glory Train

Down by the old train tracks in Glory, Mississippi
There is a man that walks alone
Almost every night when the moon is high
                Waiting for a train..............
That never comes by.

Sometimes you can see him
Sometimes you can feel him
Sometimes you just know that he's there
Walking and weeping and crying like a baby
For the girl who had left him 'cause she didn't care.

They say he died there waiting for the train
To come back through and go searching for her
In the blast of a blizzard and the arms of the wind
He froze like a statue for the train had derailed
And neither he or that old train would be running again.

There are too many stories
               That come out of Glory
And I haven't a clue if any are true
But I know this one is and that man's not a myth
And this is the story I'm telling to you.

I've seen him myself and that is the truth
When the night was quiet and the moon was full
A pale apparition with big ghostly eyes
Piercing the silence with his heartbroken moans
Walking and wailing like the poor man could die.

One night I walked there as I made my way home
Following the tracks in the cold December fog
Longing for warmth and the comfort of fire
Sad for myself and the love I had lost
Lost for my lips were the lips of a liar.

A coldness colder than  deep winter's breath
Blew on my face and clutched at my arm
I  froze where I stood like my cold feet were fused
For a man stood there holding.................
A ticket he'd never used.

I shook my head when he held out the ticket
Staring at him and not wanting to see
Then I turned to flee in my terror's mad grasp
                 Running away from my future
As he ran towards his past.

But then I stopped and turned to face him
Standing there waiting on those tracks of pure rust
His face was a see through mask of such pain
And in the distance in the darkness
We both heard the train.

It hadn't run in forty years
It hadn't existed since before I was born
It hadn't sounded that old whistle low
And how it ran then, I couldn't tell you
But the man caught the train and that's all that I know.

We Are Like Trees

We Are Like Trees

We are like trees
Our roots go deep
Even as our branches are lopped off
By life and love and loss

Our roots go deep
And try to hang on
To every bit of life
Every drop of love

And even when it appears
That we are dead or dying on the outside
The scent of love's rain will revive us
And make us stand up on the inside
And reach out for life again.

Job 14:7

“For there is hope for a tree, If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
And that its tender shoots will not cease.

pieces of music)

The River Made of Dreams

 The River Made of Dreams

Tonight, my love, I'll be off again
Like I've been wont to do
Rowing down that river of dreams
Searching still for you.

Listening for your heartbeat
The call I hope to hear
Feeling my heart beating fast
When it feels you are near.

Your smile is like my morning sun
Your eyes, my stars at night
Your love is like the moon above
Reflecting Heaven's light.

I follow the compass in my soul
That I know will lead me to
The only love I've ever known
That's ever proven true.

I miss you like a summer's breeze,
Rain on a desert floor
We only had a taste so brief
Of love but I need more.

My love, why did you have to go
Leave me alone and thus
Searching every waterway
On a shore that's turned to dust?

I know you did not mean to leave
It was against your will
Your sad eyes swore your bond to me
And we are bonded still.

The waters took you away from me
In the currents wild and wide
And I followed till I lost sight of you
And there I died inside.

I promised that I would find you again
No matter how hard it seems
And tonight I'll row my boat once more
Down that river made of dreams.

It Won't Be Tonight

Glen Hansard
put on loop

It Won't Be Tonight

Standing on the precipice
That steep and craggy cliff that draws my wounded soul
I heard my heart
             Urging me to jump......................
Whispered urging that turned to loud command
Loud command that turned to plea
That drowned out reason
                     And slowly deafened me.

I put my hands upon my ears
Senselessly
Like a blind man wearing glasses
When he has no eyes at all
Senselessly
Trying to block the scream
While begging for the fall.

I didn't want to love you
I didn't want to care............
I didn't want to see that face
That form that's standing there

I didn't want......
                     I didn't want
I didn't want your charms
Now look at me, a tangled mess
Uncradled by your arms..............

You threw me away
          And I came back.............
I left you before you could do it again
You searched for me
                And took me home
Tell me why are we lovers
When we're not even friends???

We can't even be in the same room
Without tearing each other apart
We love and we lust......
When we don't even trust.....
And all we do is break each other's hearts.

This need of you is madness
Why can't I let you be?
You cannot live without me
And you can't live with me.

That bed, it is our battlefield.....
For our wars.... one after the next
We love and cry
               We love and we die
For this wild and wounding sex.

And when we've licked our wounds
And mended..............
The heart bruise and the sore...
The passion that cannot be tamed
Soon calls us back for more.

And you hurt me and I hate you
But I love it more than life
Craving each wayward bullet......
Every slicing of the knife.

Then your dark eyes beg me to devour
As you give yourself to me
Lying helpless in your needing
And not wanting to be free.

We've run away so many times...
           Battered victims of love's thumps
And both have stood on that precipice
                      But no one ever jumps.............

We only turn around and run back to
The next sweet and savage fight
Swearing this mad love has got to end!
And knowing it won't be tonight.
