It deeply saddens me to share the news with you that on September 24, 2023 Allan Weisbecker left this world and passed on to the next. Allan's life was, well, to sum it up - full of life. He squeezed so much into his time in this world that many of us can only dream of. He experienced so many adventures and travels, and his writing inspired so many of us to find our own adventures. Allan cared so much for people, his community, and humanity in general that he would stop at nothing in seeking out the truth and trying to expose any wrong he felt had been done. In Allan's memory I would encourage you to dig deeper and seek out your own truth, and not settle for status quo. Stepping out of your own comfort zone and facing the unknown can lead to growth and deeper understanding. Continue seeking out experiences that remind you that true adventure lies not just in the places we visit, but in the journey and the courage to pursue our own paths, no matter how uncertain they may seem.
I want to share with you a quote from In Search of Captain Zero that has inspired me and influenced the way I think about things. It was, of course intended to refer to surfing but I feel like it applies to so much more: "if you’re going to go, go. Don’t sort of go or maybe go or halfway go and later think about weather your going to really go. Just f-king go."
On Thursday September 12, in Allan's memory, there will be a memorial paddle out at Ditch Plains in Mountauk, NY followed by a display of his photos. All are welcome to join for both the paddle and the photo display. Allan's family would love to see you there as we all share memories and reflect on Allan's life.

Saying goodbye to people is never easy. This was also the case in the memorial paddle out & life celebration for Montauk writer and photographer Allan Weisbecker, author of In Search of Captain Zero - one of the surfing tribe’s seminal books and a (mostly) true story of one man’s journey to locate a friend who may or may not have needed finding.

For me, Allan’s work as a writer and photographer as well as his love for dogs represented a complicated man with incredible talent who lived an extraordinary life, shucking off and pissing off anything or anyone that tried to corral him. He was - in my book - one of the great writers of our time, a truth teller, a naysayer, a conspiracy theorist and a wickedly acerbic curmudgeon. And, he was kind. But you had to sift through the layers of wilderness to get there. I’m grateful to have known him a little bit, communicated with him recently and to be present at the storytelling session of his paddle out and photography exhibition at @484_gallery . It confirmed my perspective of this irascible character and made me (again) incredibly grateful for this non-conforming, and accepting Montauk community.

So thanks Allan for the funny, grumpy, cigar smoke filled convos at the beach, for the books that inspired my life in searching for waves and awakening the travel lust that comes with it, and for never ever conforming or even glancing towards society’s norms & expectations and living the life of a pirate.

He was of a dying breed of Long Island watermen - the extinction of this species has been greatly accelerated by the recent Hamptonfication of Montauk.

He was of the old solo, self-centered breed of surfer who was too dysfunctional to ever settle down with a wife and kids but clever enough to fund an exotic trip through something like glassing borrowed cash into the board they brought out, and drugs glassed into the board they brought back - or -piloting the fishing boat way offshore to pick up an air-dropped load of illegal cargo and hiding it in the hold under the fish they caught for cover. His story about accidentally docking his loaded boat in the back of a CT deadhead's home was classic.

Captain Zero and Cosmic Banditos are two of my favorite books. Can’t You Get Along With Anyone, on the other hand, was nigh unreadable.

I’d heard Johnny Depp had owned the adaptation rights to Captain Zero and had sold them to Waypoint Entertainment who has them currently. They were set to film with a decent director and good backing but the pandemic hit and they redirected with a slew of near-productions that went nowhere, with only one film in post-pandemic and another languishing in pre-production.

John Cusack owns the rights to Cosmic Banditos and has been saying he’s going to make it for the past 20+ years.

Last I heard, his motorhome was in the possession of a cousin, possibly in Oakland?

Everything I will write here that isn't my own experience is what I have read elsewhere. So keep that in mind...

Ifollowed his blog for many years and actually gave him gas money every month for the last few years. Love him or hate him he always intrigued me as a writer and for some of his off the wall ideas.

He spent the last six or eight years traveling in his motorhome with his dogs. He was writing and doing research on various subjects while traveling the country. He also was a very good photographer and spent the last few years focused on that .

The last year his health started to go south, his blog posts became few and far between. Those of us who followed close could tell he was in much pain and he wasn't happy about it. We knew his future was uncertain.

I think in his last post he said he was heading west towards Oregon from the high desert.

The rest is some of what I read from comments on his blog...

There was much confusion at first on how, when and where he died. Some even speculated he may have been the victim of foul play considering some of the areas of his interests.

He apparently was staying at a campground near Mt Shasta in California.
One of the commenter's wrote. There was a single gun shot heard on the night of September 25. The next morning the sheriff arrived and then the cornoer.
There must have been a note or some kind of instructions, as one of the blog members was contacted to receive his dog.

There was a lot more to the man than most will know or even admit.
I won't judge him as that's not for me to do.

He always made me think with a critical mind.

I miss his writing and his photos.

WILL POST MORE STUFF AS I FIND IT. I still have no closure on his passing

and I still miss him so terribly.

If anyone has anything to add or say or anything.......send it to tarduvspam@yahoo.com and I will add it here 💔

NOTE FROM VOO........

P.S.  Most of the info posted here I did Not write...just found online and posted   Voo

I will tell you this though...Before he died. he was planning on coming to my hometown, researching, and writing a book about me and the unbelievable stuff that happened to me in 2021. He said the world needed to hear my story but I was too afraid for "the world" to hear it and kept putting him off until it was too late. Something I will forever regret......😢😭😒
