California Studs and Duds
There was a dark cloud over my house
And the sun had been erased
The day you took your pretty mask off
And let me see your face.
The day all the love and all of the trust
You'd been building in me without doubt
Dissolved into reality like the illusion it was
And left me standing there open mouthed..
I should have known, I should have known
Should have seen those red flags flapping
In the breeze of your insincerities
As I fell into your trapping.
Why is it that almost every man I've met
From that California land
Seems to be a narcissist in love with himself
And the mirror in his hand?
Believing his own hype
And legacies of his own making,
Believing he has wisdom and depth
But he's shallow and he's faking.
Is there something in the water out there
That creates these hateful lovers?
Something there that turns real into unreal
When you pull back the covers?
Do all these actors walk around
Playing characters and roles?
Auditioning hearts to play their next victim
As the heart of the last one folds?
I never dreamed upon meeting
These dazzling, daunting creatures
That soon the charm would melt away
And expose such darkened features.
And all the witless, undone wrong
Would be thrown in my face
Stabbed with cold accusing eyes
Then find myself replaced.
I never ever saw it coming
The rug pulled beneath my feet
I stood with shattered mind and with
My heart like shredded wheat.
They hate it when they see you see
Though you've been so sweet and fair
That when their masks are torn away
There's simply nothing there.
Emptiness and hollowness
These California studs........
Are full of that and yet still boast
When they're exposed as duds.
I'm not a cruel and spiteful person
Not a mean bone in my frame
And everyone that knows me well
Speaks highly of my name.
Self lovers play such awful games
They don't know how to love
They only like it you're when down
And they're hovering up above.
Never meet your idols, they say
And that saying I find to be fact
I gave my poor heart to those that I adored
And now, well.... I just want my heart back.
California dude, I've torn down your pedestal
As you're flexing your muscles out there in the sun
Turning and yearning to break another sweet heart
You can turn over now, 'cause baby, you're done.
