ARE YOU AFRAID?

Are You Afraid?

Are you afraid? she asked of me
But I answered not her query
For I was much, so much afraid
But thrilled and much and very.

So long I'd waited for her call
So long I'd dreamed of this
Waiting for her promises
Longing for her kiss.

But dreamless nights had turned me back
When no dream could be found
And I had wandered far and long
On wearied feet and ground.

Waiting on that special isle
Beyond the field of flowers
I sought her every tear-stained night
And waited many hours.

Until my heart had given up
And I turned myself away
To leave that place, with saddened face
And then I heard her say.........

"My love, where goeth thou this night?
Why hast thou lost thy dream?
I've watched thee, lo, these many moons
Hidden by the stream.

I made a path of roses
I sang a lover's song
I lit for you a lantern light
I waited all night long.

But you looked in the wrong direction
You heard not my sad, sweet tune
Your tears put out the candle's spark
And your darkness hid the moon.

Come here, beloved, come to me
Rest your weary head
I'll tell you tales to make you well
Of living things and dead.

See how my dark eyes shine for you?
See how my soft lips smile?
I am a mystery, this is true
But in me, you'll find no guile.

I feel your heart like a thousand drums
Press against my own
I feel your blood rush through that heart
Like it's racing to get home.

Shh!!! Don't speak, don't say a thing!
There's time enough for words
I only want this sweet communion
That our two hearts have heard.

I know you've searched a long long time
And I have evaded you
But I had to prove unto myself
That you, my love, were true.

I'm not like other maidens
Who tease and employ tears
For if you make me weep, my love
I'll simply disappear.

And all you'll see is a fading glimpse
Or a shadow of my smile
You may hear a snippet of my song
And in dreams, hold me a while.

But not for long and not always
Will your eyes behold my face
For the shadows take me if I cry
To a dark and lonely place.

Until my heart is healed and whole
And my soul is once more well
Alas, till now, no man has learned
To break this cursed spell.

Are you the One, my waiting one?
The man to set me free?
For if you're not, turn now and run
And let this maiden be.
.........................
For if you're not, turn now and run
And let this maiden be............
But if you are, then turn again
And give your love to me."

I THOUGHT MYSELF

I Thought Myself

I thought myself a symphony
With perfect rhyme and grace
Melody pure and so sublime
Until I saw your face

I thought myself a masterpiece
With art throughout my form
But my colors melted into gold
When I felt myself reborn

I thought myself a perfect poem
Writ to bring a tear
To every listening heart that could
And every hearing ear

I thought myself complete and whole
With no fear of exposure
Until my heart fell in your hands
And I lost all composure

I  thought myself but I didn't know
I didn't know my lack
Until you saw my broken-ness
And gave me myself back

And if I may, I'd like to stay
Here in your paradise
I thought myself but now I know myself
Shining in your eyes.

EDDIE AND ME TAKE 3

EDDIE AND ME
(a true story)

the famous Eddie

Eddie and Me

Eddie the Elephant
Sleeps in my bed
Sometimes, he even
Sleeps under my head
Sometimes he crawls out
And falls on the floor
But he knows I'll wake up
And find him once more.

Eddie the Elephant
Is soft as can be
Big, gray, with two button eyes
To see me
He has a long trunk
And a fuzzy white tail
And when I am sick,
His warm hugs makes me well.

Eddie the Elephant
And Moochie the Moose
My two bestest pals
When I want to run loose
We hide in the tent house
And tear up the bed
We fill all the other toy's hearts
Full of dread.

When we play like pirates
And we play like kings
And great super heroes
And other cool things
We throw balls at bad guys
And dress up in capes
We hang from the curtains
Like aliens and apes.

And Moochie is nice
But he's little and brown
With a squeak toy inside him
That makes a neat sound
And he tries to be brave
Like Eddie and I
But he can't beat us jumping
No matter how he might try.

I have lots of toys
More so than most
And I eat lots of bananas
And a lot of cheese toast
I love tea and butter
And climbing the trees
Having imaginary
Adventures on seas.

I know lots of people
And teachers and pals
I like all the boys
But I love little gals
I like to tell stories
And sing songs and dance
Wear Mighty Mouse tee shirts
And Super Man pants.

I like speaking French
And Spanish, Chinese
But I really hate mosquitoes
Even though they like me
They chase me and catch me
When I'm in the yard
And they kiss me like Mama
But they kiss me too hard.

I love all my family
My mom and my dad
They're the best Mom and Daddy
That I've ever had
Now I'm turning five
And I'm growing so tall
That when I fall down
It's a long way to fall.

But back to my buddy
Back to my friend
I’ve got to tell ‘bout him
Before this poem ends
He’s been with me now
For many long years
Listening so closely
With his big fluffy ears.

To all of my troubles
My secrets and woes
And when I go to time out
That’s where he goes
But Eddie can’t follow
When I’m in the bath
He hides in the corner
And I hear him laugh.

Hosea

‘Cause Elmo and Moochie
Jose’, Hankey, too
Are toys that can’t get wet
(Though sometimes they do)
But Eddie the Elephant
Is so cuddly to touch
That I slobber him with kisses
‘Cause I love him so much.
Hankey

Right now I am worried
About my best friend
And I’m hoping this story
Still has a good end
‘Cause he’s in the washer
Going round and around
And I know he can’t swim
So I’m afraid he might drown.

I think he might need me
To rescue him now
I’ll think up a plan
And I’ll save him somehow
‘Cause he would save me
From the bad guys and stuff
He’s strong and he’s fearless
Though he’s just made of fluff.

So, Eddie, hold on
I’m thinking this through
I’ll pull you from the water
And I’ll rescue you
But if you go into
The dryer that’s hot
Oh, Eddie, I’m sorry
But that, I cannot.

You’ll have to be brave
And be a big boy
Though I know those ole baths
You do not enjoy
When you get out of there
You’ll be fluffy and clean
And then we can play
Like we’re pirates so mean.

I’ll squeeze you and love you
And pull your fur out
And Mama will make you
Giggle at me and shout
And we’ll drink chocolate milk
And get dirty again
Then we’ll snuggle together
‘Cause you’re my bestest friend.

Down into Dream Land
On adventures we’ll go
Climb all the mountains
And run in the snow
You’ll sleep in my arms
And maybe under my head
And in the morning I’ll find you
Somewhere under my bed.

(the un-named monkey)

But wherever you are
And wherever you go
I’ll find you and grab you
And you’ll always know
You’ll stay with me forever
When I’m all big, you’ll see
For you’ll live in this story
About Eddie and Me.

The End

IS IT RAINING WHERE YOU ARE??

Is It Raining Where You Are?

Is it raining where you are, I wonder
Are those sky tears running down your panes
Leaving silver tracks on all the windows?
Are you standing there watching your breath
Fog up the glass as it thunders
And can you see my reflection in the flashes?
I can see yours
It's there beside mine on the window
Just a shadow, but you, in all your ghostly glory
You, as you were when you loved me
And me, as I was when I was loved
I see us still together every time it rains
But just for tonight, I'll not turn around
To see the empty space that fills this room
I'll trace the palm print on the window
Lay my hand inside it until it melts away in morning
And though I know better than to believe in memory
I'll pretend it's yours.
