FORBIDDEN

FORBIDDEN

You and I, we long for things forbidden
We long for love that never can be given
We yearn for dances in the dark of night
And feel the lure of love kept out of sight.

You and I, we need what's not conceded
We've heard the warnings our ears never heeded
And yet, our hearts, so lost in love's demands
Fell into love and took it from our hands.

You and I, we live in simulation
Of life and breath, yet live in stimulation
Of passing glance and touch of fingertips
And yearn in vain for brush of tender lips.

You and I, we pass on crowded streets
Surreptitiously, maneuver there to meet
Touch of hand and sigh and catch of breath
And then are whisked away to lover's death.

How long will this go on, I cannot say
So many years now, we have lived this way
So many nights we've cried until the dawn
And held to hope though hope in hope has gone.

You and I, of blood and creed apart
We feel no difference, bonded in our hearts
We see no ancient need to separate
But live in cruel abeyance to our fates.

My love, my love, my soul, what must I do?
My destiny was sealed when I saw you
My heart was given to that golden hand
And I became your woman, you, my man.

You and I, are promised to the others
But our two souls will never join another's
Our hearts are melded into shape of one
And so will be until our lives are done.

So in the marketplace, we steal a look
You drop a flower for me in a book
You smile a smile that no one else will see
And in your way, I know you're loving me.

My father meets your father in the square
And scowls, pretends, he doesn't see him there
Ancestral feuds thrive through infinity
And do not know they ended with you and me.

You and I. I love to say those words
I whisper to you knowing I shan't be heard
I hold you close to me and stroke your hair
Open my eyes and see that you're not there.

Tomorrow, we will meet again, I know
And watch till out of sight, then we must go
My father's hand will pull me from your path
But through our tears, in silence, we will laugh.

DREAMTIME AND TRUE

EARTHLY CREATURES

Earthly Creatures

We are earthly creatures
Marked by life
And slowed
By death.

We are lifted
By love
And downed
By reality.

Our lives
Are long walks
Through deserts
Interspersed with an oasis or two.

Friends are roses
Blooming along
The gray roadsides
That we stumble upon.

And families
Are usually people
That start out as friends
And end up as strangers.

Such is life
This thing we must do
As we search for meaning
And solace in the storm.

If true love comes
It comes as a surprise
And like children, we, without thought
Rip open the packages.

The roads wind through mountains
And our eyes are darkened
By tears and rain and loss
And brightened in the moments of sunshine.

We are creatures
Like no others
We are not animals
No matter if we live like they.

We are men
Who walk upright
And seek to rise
While falling down.

And if, at the end of it all
We are counted worthy
To be adopted by heavenly creatures
We will adapt, though it will be hard, to joy.

PICTURE THIS

Picture This….
.
.
.
Your arms
At midnight
In the sand….
.
.
My heart
A captive
In your hand….
.
.
Your eyes
Like windows
I peek in….
.
.
My eyes
Meet yours
And seek again.
.
.
Picture this….
The two of us
Lying, listening
To the rush
.
.
The sea is silver
In moonlight’s glow
As stars speak secrets
The sea can’t know
.
.
And you and I
Like lovers, all
Wish on those stars
And hear the call
.
.
Of tide and turning
There in the dark
While night winds fan
The flame from spark.
.
.
We drink the wine
That’s pressed from love
And touch the skies
That sleep above
.
.
Picture this….
My love, with me
Your arms at midnight….
Beside the sea.

IF I KNEW

If I Knew

If I knew the word
Would I say it?
If I knew the prayer
Would I pray it?

If I thought the thought
Would I think it?
If I had the drink
Would I drink it?

If I had the feast
Would I dine?
And lose my inhibitions
In wine?

If love was a gift
Would I take it?
And hold it so tight
I would break it.

If I had a heart
Would I feel?
And know the untruth
And the real?

I do not know
Just what I think
When all my life
Is on the brink.

But I am hoping
That you see
And will answer
All these things for me.
