ALREADY THERE a prose poem full of odds and ends

Already There

Walking through life
We stumble sometimes
Upon unlocked doors......

And we hesitate, wondering
If we should open that door
That is standing there ajar, beckoning
For us to take a chance.

There may be danger lurking there,
There may be terrifying consequences,
Or there may be something wonderful
We never know.

And some of us will never know
Because we are too afraid to take that chance
And so we flinch and jerk back our hands,
Leave the door ajar for someone else to open.

And someone else does bravely open that door
And discovers all sorts of fantastic things waiting inside:
A new job, a home, the love of a lifetime,
The answer to a prayer, our prayer, but we were too afraid.

Afraid to try because we are scarred by rejection,
Crushed by hurt and traumatized by terror
Emotional wounds covered by scar tissue and flimsy bandages
That never healed us, only covered up our pain so no one could see it.

But we always knew it was there inside us
Just waiting to be triggered by the next bullet,
The next blade, the next unkind word
And we've traded our kindness for anger and hidden our love in hate.

Knowing that that's not who we are or even want to be
We're just trapped in a cell of emotion,
Fallen down a well full of broken-ness
And imprisoned in pain that we don't know how to heal.

God didn't make us like that.............

He made us in His image and His image is love,
His heart is love and His thoughts are of love,
His kingdom is love and His bounty is love
And love is what we're all afraid of the most.

So we disrupt His plans and go running away
From every open door, every road map that falls on our path,
Every circumstance He has worked on for years
To bless us and fix us and turn us around.

And I, am more guilty of that running than most
Fleeing when no one pursues, no threat is discerned
No evidence is presented and no danger seems imminent
Running and running when I should give myself up.

What is it about surrender that terrifies our soul?
Why hold onto pride when it comes before every fall?
Why do we stare down and back away from a blessing?
A blessing that can heal us and bring our hope back again?

I once stumbled over a rainbow and found hidden treasures
So many my back and my arms couldn't bear
And I fell in a well full of love never knowing
That the love I fell into was already there.

Already there, waiting for me to find it
Already there but my eyes could not see
It was already there just beyond the unlocked door
Waiting to give itself unto me.

And I tasted love and touched it's hand
I heard it's sweet voice softly say
"You've finally found the thing you wanted."
And I just screamed and ran away.

Look in my eyes, my searching friend
Into eyes of sorrow that rued my choice
I threw away my long sought joy
That called to me with tender voice.

For fear of hurt and fear of losing
I threw away the promise of
All of my dreams coming to pass
No longer pursuing, but running from love.

The irony is not lost on me
Believe me, friend, I see the jest
In what I'm saying and warning you
Love's student I was, but not the best.

But now I know and now I share
With all who'll listen and heed my call
Love hurts sometimes and love heals the hurting
So don't run from it's touch or fear the fall.

It's frightening to fall when you don't know what's waiting
And we've all reached to hearts that proved they didn't care
But when you fall in true love, love will be there to catch you
You can't fall into something that's not already there.

Slip Through The Portal

I
Can't
Stay Away From You
Instrumental

Slip Through The Portal

Slip through the portal tonight in your dreams

And fear not the dragon for he's not what he seems
Meet me at midnight on the shore by the sea
And together we'll run far away, you and me.

We won't let them catch us or keep us apart

For they can't dismember this love in our hearts
It's as big as a mountain and as deep as the sea
And always has been and always will be.

I just want to be on this ship in your arms
So far away from the world and it's harms
I just want to see all the joy and surprise
Looking at me in your hazel green eyes.

I just want to taste the sweet kiss on your lips

Feel you caress me with your fingertips
I just want to know that what I feel is true
And sail into that dream world on this ship, with you.

WORDLESSLY

I Can't Make You Love Me

Wordlessly

Wordlessly, I speak volumes
To the deafness of your heart
I tell you how I miss you
Whenever we're apart.
Wordlessly, I try to say
The things your ears won't hear
My eyes cry out my love for you
Whenever you come near.
Wordlessly, my sad soul begs
For the love you cannot give
For you no longer care for me
Or if I die or live.
Wordlessly, I sing a song
That I wrote just for you
And your lips tell me I'm lying
When every word is true.
Wordlessly, I'm breaking
Like a stem holding a heavy flower
I try to hold my head up high
But my heart can only cower.
Wordlessly, I breathe your name
And bare my needy flesh
Seduction that always worked before
Works no more now, I guess.
Wordlessly, I scream out my pain
To ears that do not care
Ears that used to love my words
Ears no longer listening there.
Wordlessly, I bow my knees
And beg your love to stay
But you look down in your disdain
And kick my love away.
Wordlessly, upon the ground
I lay in hopeless woe
My eyes full of such bitter tears,
I watch you turn and go.
But before you leave, you say to me
Words I can't believe are true
Don't waste your time, girl, grieving me
I never did love you.
Then wordlessly, you close the door
On all our love and life
You never were my husband
But I was your faithful wife.
Wordlessly, my life goes on
And I survive it day by day
But the day you left, my mouth fell silent
And doesn't have a word to say.
I cannot write another poem
I cannot compose a song
I cannot say another word
Now that my muse is gone.
You took the sun out of my sky
And stole my joy from me
Now everything I cannot say
My heart says wordlessly.

It Was That

Dogwoods blooming by crystal streams
Twilight drifting past your shoulders
And touching my cheeks with starlight
We kissed our first kiss………….
It was that innocent, that special.

Mistletoe falling from Christmas trees
In a meadow draped white with snow
And decorated by angels
We danced our first dance………………
It was that breathless, that pure.

Cathedral bells chiming in the new year
In a golden city with silver streets
And champagne filling every mud puddle
We became one at our first joining………..
It was that beautiful, that forever.

And we breathed each other’s air
And walked upon one another’s feet
Arms entwined like ivy through lattice
With lips that sought no other mouth……………
It was our life, it was our love.

Van Gogh painted us,
Monet decorated our house,
Chopin wrote our love songs,
And Da Vinci was our teacher……………
It was our future, it was our history.

We grasped life with eager eyes
Living every moment
With our souls woven in wonder
Devouring love like bowls of bread………
And never getting filled.

Dandelions pushing through newly born grass
On a May day so golden the sun was singing
And wrapping the river in heated arms
We felt our first inkling……………..
It was that puzzling, that inconceivable.

And Autumn came
And the leaves did not turn orange and fall
The trees fell instead
And with them, all the colors in the world……………..
And left a canvas gray and without sun.

The gold of the dandelion
Turned to fragile wisps of fluff
Though the stem stood tall and straight
As long as it could stand…………..
And the winds came, dispersing all it’s glory.

What do you say when the book is finished?
When symphonies lapse into silence
And landscapes fall from their frames?
How do you recapture dreams that die at waking
And retrace steps that have vanished on the shore?

Dragons breathed upon me
And swept the sky of stars
The last rose wept and laid itself so gently on your heart
And every light blinked in the dark……………
And our house bowed it’s head.

Wildfires burning through emerald forests
Clear cut mountains that used to be green
Dust and ashes where there used to be life
We said our first goodbye………………….
It was that desolate, it was that sad.

Run To Me

Run To Me

Don't run from Me but to Me
Don't go but yet draw near
Don't hide your face now from Me
Don't look on Me in fear.

Don't shout "Oh, God!" in anger
But call My name in love
Don't think I do not see you there
From where I live above.

Every day of your life is an integrity test
To see what character you build
You can't win the game by exalting your name
But only when to Me do you yield.

I have only such good thoughts about you
I have only true love for your soul
I have much success and so much I will bless
If you make serving Me your one goal.

My child, don't turn your back on Me
In this world of hate and harms
I wait to heal your aching heart
When you run into My arms.
