CAUSE WE LOVE HIM

CAUSE WE LOVE HIM

HE SENT THEM OUT, SOME TWO BY TWO
AND THEY WENT THOUGH THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO
OF HIS WILL AND HIS WANT, THEY HAD BARELY A CLUE
BUT THEY WERE SENT AND THEY WENT CAUSE THEY LOVED HIM.

THEY WENT THROUGH THE HIGHWAYS AND HEDGES AND THORNS

THEY WERE PELTED WITH STONES AND WERE TAUNTED BY SCORN
THEY WERE RIDICULED, MOCKED FROM THE DUSK TO THE DAWN
BUT THEY WERE SENT AND THEY WENT CAUSE THEY LOVED HIM.

MIRACLES HAPPENED AND THE CROWDS LARGE THEY GREW

HEALINGS AND DELIVERANCES AND SALVATIONS TOO
DEMONS RAN OUT WHEN THEY WERE COMMANDED TO
AND THE DISCIPLES' FAITH GREW CAUSE THEY LOVED HIM.

AND TIME WENT ON AND THE CHURCH GREW IN NUMBER

THERE WAS LITTLE TIME FOR SLACKING AND NO TIME FOR SLUMBER
LOST HUMANITY GOT FOUND AND THE WORLD WEPT AT THE WONDER
AND IT SPREAD ROUND THE EARTH CAUSE THEY LOVED HIM.

INNOCENT MEN, NEWLY FREED, NEWLY BORN

PREACHED IN THE MARKET PLACE TO THE LOW AND FORLORN
AND WALKED CARRYING THE GOSPEL TILL THEIR TIRED FEET WERE WORN
BUT THEY WALKED AND THEY TALKED CAUSE THEY LOVED HIM.

THEN CAME THE DAY WHEN THE LOST ONES REBELLED

AND DECIDED THEY'D RATHER CONTINUE ON INTO HELL
AND THEY SILENCED THE CHRISTIANS AND TOLD THEM NOT TO TELL
BUT THEY COULD NOT BE SILENT CAUSE THEY LOVED HIM.

AND THE WOLVES ROSE UP AND CORNERED THE SHEEP

DISPATCHED THEM AT NOONDAY AND SLAUGHTERED THEM IN THEIR SLEEP
DEVISED TORTURES ANEW TO MAKE THEIR CHILDREN WEEP
BUT THEY DIED IN THEIR JOY CAUSE THEY LOVED HIM.

AND THROUGH THE AGES, TIME'S MARCHED ON

AND CLOSER NOW ARE WE TO HOME
THE SHEEP TO THE SHEEPFOLD, TO THE PLACE WE BELONG
WE MARCH ON AND WE FIGHT CAUSE WE LOVE HIM,

THE WORLD IS FULL OF DANGEROUS SNARES

PITS OF PERSECUTION AND COFFINS OF CARES
THE WOLVES FAR OUTNUMBER THE SHEEP HERE AND THERE
BUT THE SHEEP GIVE THEIR LIVES CAUSE WE LOVE HIM.

NOW HERE AT THE EDGE OF THE END OF ALL THINGS

WE CAN LOOK INTO HEAVEN AND BEHOLD, OUR HEARTS SING
THOUGH THE WOLVES BITE AND BRUISE US, WE WILL GIVE EVERYTHING
AND WE REGRET NOT A THING CAUSE WE LOVE HIM.

Stranded

Stranded

On an island in an ocean
Like a fish out of the sea
I am stranded like a shipwreck
With no one to rescue me.

In a desert without water
Dying slowly of my thirst
I am empty in my spirit
With my soul about to burst.

'Neath a sun that shines no warmth
And a sky bereft of star
I have no compass here to guide me
For I don't know where you are.

You have left me by the wayside
You have plunged me to despair
You have torn our bonds asunder
Left my love just standing there.

I don't know where I belong now
I can't navigate alone
There's no place to lay my head now
And no heart to call my home.

I am stranded, I am stranded
Robbed of all my joy and mirth
On an island in an ocean
On this sad and sun-less Earth.

Friday Night, Corner Table

Friday Night,  Corner Table

Friday night
Corner table
Candlelight,
Wine,
And you.

I'm so nervous
That I'll say something
Do something
Feel something
Wrong.

But
Your eyes
Shine over my face
Like sparkles on the ocean
Like a man on a mission.

Cheers, you say
And I nod,
Raise my glass,
Clink and let the just brought champagne
Glide it's way down my thirsty throat.

Are you happy?
I'm caught off guard
And I blink and laugh a small laugh
As the bubbles tickle my nose
And I feel your fingers on my wrist.

The band starts,
The busboy takes the dishes away
All the while smiling
And staring at me in my sequins
And freshly curled hair.

You signal
For more vineyard nectar
Unless you want something more potent?
You query and I shake my head
No, thank you, I've had more than enough.

I turn my chair
Towards the stage
But you catch my arm
And turn me back to you
Not yet, you say, not just yet.

And we sit there
Watching one another
Wondering in low light
Swimming in questions
Drowning in song.

After three pieces, fast and slow
The maestro stops
Holds up his hand and says
We have a special request
From the gentleman at the corner table.

He wants to know
If the girl of his dreams,
The lovely lady with the pretty curls,
The woman that's sitting there tonight,
Will be his wife?

And I gasp
And put my hand to my mouth
As you slip a ring onto my other. Will you?
You ask with your heart in your eyes. Will you be mine?
But I am speechless.

This was going to be our last date
I had decided. I was tired of waiting.....
Our last date. I had been trying to find the words
But if you never read this poem, I guess
That's something that you'll never know.
