no compromise

 no compromise

we found and lost one another before we met
and for the rest of our lives, we'll regret
what could have been, what should have been, it's true
and I will never know the joy of you.

we found a ground that we could share together
but found a ground that we could not share, ever
and in that finding lost what we had found
and said goodbye to that, our common ground.

we found a love that fairy tales speak of
and yet if love's withheld, then is it love?
Is love given in anger love that's true
and will I ever again know love like you?

we found the place that our hearts longed to live
but compromise of mind we could not give
we tossed the petals of the rose to wind
and turned our backs and began our search again.

For the love that almost was and never will be.

  1. Sounds like the curse of Tantalus....always reaching but never attaining. How frustrating! What were you going through in 2004 that brought this on? Strangely, I was hearing "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison in the back of my mind as I read this.

    1. I was in love with a guy who kept playing games with me. He chased me when I ran away and acted like
I wasn't there when he caught me.....sad smile

  2. I don’t recall ever reading this poem but I could feel the hurt in those words that wanted to be soothed by an acknowledgement. To me love withheld means no true love at all…….. It’s always a heart issue. A very nice way of putting it, Voo! Straight from the heart!
